Singing from the heart for War Child

Another amazing night of music and friends – all for a great cause – at the War Child benefit at the Drake Underground last night. So. Much. Fun. And so very moving as well.

MC Kat Leonard introduced an incredible line-up of music artists, all donating their time – as well as some of their CD and merch proceeds to War Child:

Kristine St-Pierre

Chris Assaad

Heather Hill, who was joined by Four Winds Collective members Kat Leonard, Meghan Morrison & Arlene Paculan

JP Saxe
Angela Saini

Decided to do a photo essay post this time – so here goes…

Wonder Women & Super Men rock The Central in Wonder Women 2013 fundraiser

Big fun times with amazing artists and friends at The Central on Saturday night for LMG Productions’ Super Wonderful New Year Kickoff fundraiser for the upcoming Wonder Women 2013 festival in March. Organizers and hosts Arlene Paculan and Kat Leonard (aka Musedy Tag Team) treated us to some tunes, including their new Michael Jackson mash-up, and some kick-ass raffle prizes, including CDs from participating artists and tickets to the upcoming Wonder Women concert on March 8.

This was one incredible party – and we were moved, rocked and amazed by feature acts of Wonder Women and, for the first time, Super Men – check them out:

It was a reunion of sorts, and I got to see folks I hadn’t seen in a while, including some of the incredible open mic guests: Angela Saini, Meghan Morrison, Alyssa Vox Raw, Aynsley Saxe (who I finally got to meet in person after our ongoing chats over Twitter), JP Saxe and the Four Winds (Arlene Paculan, Heather Hill, Kat Leonard and Meghan Morrison, who got together on Hill’s song “27″), among others. Hanging out with these folks was like being enveloped in a big, warm hug – such an inspiring and supportive group of artists, family, friends and fans. With thanks to The Central staff for keeping us fed and beered all night. And, damn, those boneless chicken wings are good!

Shout out to Ellie Anderson, who was set to feature but was off sick. Hope you’re feeling better today, lady. And I was sorry to miss Candice Sand’s set, but it was getting late and I had some commitments on Sunday that required a good night’s sleep (more on that later).

Girl power rawkin out @ Supertash “Before The World Ends” CD launch

What would you do if the world was gonna end on December 21, 2012? Rawk out, of course! Maybe some other things too, but this is a PG kinda blog, so I’ll leave that up to all y’all.

The countdown for Supertash’s Before The World Ends CD launch ended last night at the Gladstone Hotel, with some incredible talent taking to the stage for a super big fun, girl-power packed evening. Also on feature: jewelery made by Tash and Meghan’s awesome delicious cupcakes, as well as some very tasty catered nosh.

Throughout the evening, host Kat Leonard, accompanied by Arlene Paculan, treated us to some tunes of their own: a slowed down ballad version of Kat’s song “Jockstrap” (from Kat’s one-woman fangirl opus to Johnny Depp, A Depper Kind of Love), Arlene’s song “Nightmare” (also performed by Kat, including her own improv’d expletives) – then both singing the Whitney Houston/Bobby Brown mash-up medley they performed at Theatre Passe Muraille’s recent Songbook Series cabaret, with Kat doing an interpretive dance performance as Arlene performed vocals on the big “I Will Always Love You” finale. A great combo of music and comedy – irreverent, fun and passionate.

Sherry-Lynn Lee opened with a solo acoustic set, accompanying herself on guitar, moving us with a great range of pop, rock and soulful, melodious ballads – mixing her set of originals with covers “With or Without You” and “Someone Like You.” It was the first time I’ve heard her live – I’m looking forward to hearing more, and I took her music home on CD. Keep an ear out for this lady.

It had been a while since I saw Meghan Morrison performing with her full band – and I especially love the violin arrangements, which add a poetic, haunting quality to her songs. Opening with “This Song” – violin crying along with her voice, “the sound that my heart makes” – she moved into “Good People (Sideways),” a song inspired by an incident that occurred on the steps of the Gladstone Hotel a couple of years ago during Nuit Blanche. Showcasing Meghan’s great range – vocally, she’s been compared to Alanis Morissette, early Sarah McLachlan (circa Vox) and even Paula Cole – the band performed several songs from Meghan’s We Are All Born Naked CD, finishing with my fave “Hush,” which Meghan said she pretty much has to do every gig or else someone will be upset over the omission. Coming up: Meghan plays tomorrow night (Nov 13) at The Drake Hotel at 7:30 p.m. as a guest performer for the SUPERCELL screening by Tara Cooper – and look out for her monthly webcasts, featuring local indie music artists.

Another piece of trivia – and the jury is still out on whether this actually works or not. Apparently, eating a dollop of butter helps the voice when one is experiencing a dry cough. This remedy was thought up on the fly by Meghan and tried by Kat (who was dealing with a dry cough) – Kat says it works. Placebo or the real deal? Who knows.

After a brief break, the main event. Supertash (aka Tash Jolly) took over the stage with her band, treating us to three mini-sets, featuring tracks from the Before The World Ends CD and a an easy, soft acoustic guitar-driven solo set by Tash. This was one kick-ass, rawkin out at the end of the world experience. From the smokin’ hot, mysterious “Empty Hands,” which could easily be a James Bond movie theme song, to the unapologetic “No Coincidence” to the dreamy haze warning of “Blow Right Through You” and the soulful girl-power power ballad “Relief,” Supertash brought it.

It was a big fun evening of music and positive energy – and there were door prizes, where audience members submitted their superhero name and powers with their entry. Thanks to Tash for the awesome lightning bolt necklace – super hero powerful and Harry Potter magical! Online jammin’ with Meghan Morrison – Aaron Millett w Becky Prokova & Jack Walker

It’s been a while since I’ve mentioned Meghan Morrison’s online jam – broadcast online monthly, usually on a Tuesday night – and I was very happy when, after missing the recent live broadcast on September 19, Meghan kindly sent me the link, which I’ve included at the end of the post. Meghan’s guests for the show were Aaron Millett (with Becky Prokova) and Jack Walker, with Josh Gold-Smith assisting with sound/tech and also supplying the keys for the jam.

Aaron Millett started off the broadcast with some smooth, easy folk rock, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar. Songs “Friend” and “Winter Rose” featured lovely, poetic lyrics and warm vocals. During the ongoing chat room Q&A, Aaron responded to a query on how he deals with writer’s block: walk, go into the forest, keep the mind active. He added that writer’s block doesn’t really happen, as there’s always something to write about – it may not be good, but write it down anyway. Someone also asked about his thumb tattoos; he has an “A” (for Aaron and Africa – he spent some time living in Ethiopia) and two flowers (memorials for two friends). Becky Prokova, who just started playing guitar over the past year and recently started collaborating as a singer/songwriter with Aaron, joined him for “Heavy Heart,” creating sweet harmonies – and giving us a taste of the upcoming spring record release. You can find Aaron at: http://aaronmillett.webs.com/

Jack Walker featured a fine acoustic set, serving up some driving blues-infused folk rock and lovely lyrical ballads with songs like “Evil is Takin’ Over,” “Poet and the Painter” (in which he also plays harmonica) and “Dance for the Moon” (by request via the chatroom). “Poet” is a favourite of Meghan’s and I can see why – it’s a beautiful ballad – and it may be my favourite too. Jack is heading to England for a month to play some gigs over there – here’s where you can check him out, including links to his SoundCloud site and Twitter handle: http://www.facebook.com/jackwalkertunes/info

This was Meghan’s 85th show and she’s now broadcasting from the attic at her house – which means the tall peeps have to mind their noggins – and had a hand with tech this time: Matt on camera and Josh Gold-Smith on sound (Josh also provided some improv piano during a set change-over and played during the jam). Meghan performed a couple of her own tunes (by request), including “Ball and Chain,” with Aaron playing the thunder chamber, a really cool percussion instrument that looks like a small box, the coil inside providing the resonance. I love the vibe of these webcasts – it’s a laid back, warm and fun atmosphere, with the guest musicians taking turns on the computer keyboard for the chatroom. And, best of all, the show ends with the entire gang jamming – and the audience is invited to jam along at home. In this case, since Meghan revealed that the house is haunted, the theme of the jam was Jack’s ghost – with Becky, Aaron and Jack on guitar (with Jack also on harp), Meghan on bass and Josh on keys, and Becky and Aaron providing vocals. A haunted house, yes. Haunted with magic, that is!

Meghan’s next cyber jam will be on Tues, Oct 23 at 8 p.m., featuring piano player Baj car. You can see that live – and keep up with lovely and talented host Meghan Morrison and all her goings-on, including upcoming gigs – on her website: http://www.meghanmorrisonmusic.com/fr_home.cfm

In the meantime – if you missed this recent webcast live, you can catch it on video here: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/25534176

DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS: In the post about Friday’s opening night of Lisa Moore’s play February at Alumnae Theatre, Trevor Cartlidge’s character Dave was incorrectly identified as Cal’s friend – the character is actually Cal’s father. That error has since been corrected in that post.

Word on the Street in Toronto on Sunday, September 23

Knew I was forgetting something. Well, actually, I’m probably forgetting a lot of things. But, as I’ve mentioned before, the lack of clone technology (at least that we know of) forces me to accept my limitations as a lone blogger, shouting out arts, culture and entertainment in the web wilderness.

Word on the Street hits the streets of Toronto this Sunday, September 23  – from 11 a.m. till 6 p.m. at Queen’s Park Circle. For details and programming, check out the Toronto page on the website: http://www.thewordonthestreet.ca/wots/toronto

For info about Word on the Street events in other Canadian cities, check out their home page: http://www.thewordonthestreet.ca/wots/

In the meantime, I’ll be attending the opening night of the world premiere of Lisa Moore’s play February at Alumnae Theatre (main stage) tonight. February runs until October 6 and there will be a talkback with Moore and director Michelle Alexander after the matinée on Sunday, September 23 (which I’ll possibly pop in for after the Toronto AIDS walk – if not, I’ll try to get the scoop from one of the Alumnae folks). I’ll be back with some thoughts on the opening night festivities tomorrow. Also coming soon, a post about singer/songwriter Meghan Morrison’s recent music webcast.

What’cha doing this weekend?

Meghan Morrison band rocks The Central

Hey all – a bit late on this one today as I needed to sleep in and get to the early matinée of Moonrise Kingdom – more on that in tomorrow’s post.

Last night I had not only the pleasure of dropping by The Central (http://thecentralbar.ca/) to hear Meghan Morrison play, and in the company of some good pals like Lizzie Violet, Kat Leonard & Laurie, but I got there early enough to be the first to sample one of Meghan’s lemon poppy-seed strawberry-topped cupcakes. And it was delicious!

Morrison was the first set of the evening downstairs (opening for The Alter Kakers, which I wasn’t able to catch – next time), with bass player Stuart Everitt and Morrison’s bro Evan LeBlanc on guitar, with Morrison switching up between keys, bass and even guitar as they played tunes from her We Are All Born Naked CD – including some personal faves “Long Way,” “Letting Me Down,” “This Song” and “Hush” – as well as the first time for a new tune. From kicky pop tunes to haunting or emotion-filled ballads, Morrison’s powerful lyrics and vocals grab the audience and keep them there for the ride.

Meghan Morrison

Evan LeBlanc

Stuart Everitt

Lizzie Violet

Tycho Manson

And if the cupcakes and music from Morrison weren’t enough, the audience was treated to some special guest performances: a poem from Lizzie Violet (the darkly funny one about her mom thinking she was a child serial killer in the making), a solo by Stuart Everitt (man, does he sound like Bowie) and a song from Tycho Manson (who was spontaneously coaxed out of the audience). Some great talent and adding to the fun that is a Meghan Morrison gig: friends, fun, amazing music – and an enormous spirit of generosity. And cupcakes. :)

The power of women & art – Wonder Women V @ Celebration Square Amphitheatre

Back at the lovely Celebration Square in Mississauga last night, this time at the Amphitheatre, located near a really cool – and gorgeous – fountain/wading pool. When I was there about two weeks ago, I trekked with my pal Kat Leonard and her aunts picked us up at Kipling Station. This time, I travelled with pals Lizzie Violet and Janis Tipping – and we made the trip on MiWay transit from Islington Station. It was quite the bus trip – a bit of a schlep – and we had a really nice, and funny, driver helping us out with which stop to get off. Downtown Mississauga loops and mazes around, and you gotta watch where you’re going if you’re a newbie like us gals. And thanks to Janis’s friend Paolo for the drive to the subway at the end of the night.

This evening’s festivities was the concert portion of Wonder Women V, which this year included two days of workshops – the biggest Wonder Women event to date. Creator/organizer, and Exec Producer of Lene, Mean, & Green Productions, Arlene Paculan – also a fabulous singer/songwriter – cooked up an amazing program of female artists, with proceeds from this event going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Check out this roster of talent we had the pleasure of witnessing last night:

Dancers abecadarians (Noreena Viloria, Denise Ferrada and Teresa Trinh), students of Loyola high school, who wowed us with their moves.

Singer/songwriter/Wonder Women creator and event host Arlene Paculan, who wrapped the evening’s festivities with one of her own soulful R&B tunes. http://www.arlenepaculan.com/    @Arlene_Paculan

Visual artist Dorothy Weiss, who brought four canvasses that served as a gorgeous set decoration. http://www.dorothyweiss.com  @dorothy_weiss

Spoken word by Ellie Anderson (also a singer/songwriter), who treated us to a personal anthem that I like to call “A Song of Ellie.”  http://www.ellieandersonmusic.com/ @YouKnowEllie

Singer/songwriter Heather Hill, who performed her song (co-written with Meghan Morrison) “Wading Through Normal” – a beautiful, melodic tribute to single moms – from her Leuty Station CD.  http://www.heatherhill.ca/news.cfm @HeatherPiriHill

Dancer Heather Schiller, who performed a stunning solo piece. http://www.facebook.com/heathercschiller

Singer/songwriter Iman Wain treated us to one of her jazzy pop-infused tunes, accompanying herself on acoustic guitar.  http://www.myspace.com/imanwain  @imanwain

Singer/songwriter Joanna Chapman-Smith  http://www.joannacs.com/home.html @joannacsmusic

Actor/singer/songwriter Kat Leonard (aka Kat & the MP3), who also lended a hand with organizing this event, made us laugh hard with “Jockstrap,” a song from her one-woman Johnny Depp fan opus A Depper Kind of Love.   http://www.katleonard.com/home.cfm @katbandoo

Stand-up comic Keesha Brownie brought her deliciously fun comedy stylings with her comedy set. http://www.facebook.com/keesha.brownie.9   @BrownieLicious

Singer/songwriter Lily C grooved us with her soulful pop sounds. http://www.lilycheng.ca/lilyc.com/Home.html   @LilyCheng

Writer/editor/poet/literary reviewer and PR gal for Wonder Women Lizzie Violet performed her beautiful tribute spoken word piece “Woman of Strength.”   http://lizzieviolet.wordpress.com/ @lizzieviolet13

Singer/songwriter Meghan Morrison brought her haunting and edgy Alanis in Wonderland song stylings with “Hush” from her We Are All Born Naked CD. http://www.meghanmorrisonmusic.com/fr_home.cfm   @megsmorrison

Singer Roveena treated us to a soulful piano and acoustic guitar-backed tune, a perfect accompaniment to the mellowing evening sky.  http://www.roveenamusic.com/ @RoveenaMusic

Jazz singer Shannon Butcher brought her new ukulele out to give us a fun, jazz-inspired version of an 80s Brit pop tune.  http://www.shannonbutcher.com/  @shannonbutcher

Blues singer/songwriter Sophia Radisch, who hails from Ottawa, wailed out one of her own tunes “Don’t Mess with a Redhead” – a big vocal talent that belies a very young age. Another artist to watch out for. http://www.facebook.com/sophia.radisch

Friends, words & music @ Toronto Pride 2012

Some very big fun times at Pride this year, chickens. And as I enjoy a day off to recover – so to speak, since I’m hanging with a friend this aft. – thought I’d take a moment to reflect and share some fun moments from the past weekend.

Friday night was Chic Productions Carnival women’s Pride dance at the Palais Royale. Always love going to that space and the Pride dance always sells out there – so the place is full of women (with us single gals tagged with glow-in-the-dark bracelets before they let us loose in the wild – optional). I met up with my friend Ty, her gf Liz and their friend Cathy, and bumped into a bunch of folks throughout the evening – some of whom I hadn’t seen in ages and some I usually bump into at the Pride dance.

With entertainment by Zero Gravity Circus, a lovely woman on stilts greeted folks at the entrance and performers dazzled at various points in the evening: ribbon gymnastic dancers, silk acrobats and fire jugglers – all while the music was playing and women were dancing their butts off. The patio is especially lovely, with a gorgeous cool breeze wafting and the lake so close by and beautifully calm.

Saturday, I met up with my good pal Lizzie Violet to go see the Dyke March. It was frickin’ hot out there, but we managed to catch some shade on the west side of Yonge, a bit south of Wellesley and had a comfortable viewing spot for the festivities. We met up with Kat Leonard and Leah Walker at Lizzie’s place early evening for a fabulous picnic dinner – Lizzie’s birthday present to me – with tons of tasty vegan salads (yes, I said tasty – good food is good food!), wine and her amazing birthday cupcakes. And we watched about half a dozen episodes of Sex and the City, three of which featured Samantha’s brief relationship with a woman (played by the stunningly beautiful Sonia Braga). Another great evening with friends – and an amazing finish to my month of birthday.

Sunday – and I’ll be brief ‘cuz I have a bunch of photos I want to share – I met up with Lizzie, Kat and Leah again, along with pals Janis, Brandon, Laurie and Adrienne, to see Lizzie perform in the Beautiful and the Damned (B&D) readings at the Paul Kane Parkette (the Clean, Sober and Proud Stage). Poets/spoken word artists included: Duncan Armstrong, David Bateman, Philip Cairns, DM Moore and Lizzie Violet. Since Zelda’s is now closed after sustaining a fire, the next B&D event will be at Glad Day bookstore on July 19. After taking a break indoors at Spirits pub for an early dinner and a pint, we returned to that stage for an evening of music with Iman Wain, Rex Baunsit, Arlene Paculan and Meghan Morrison. Amazingly talented folks sharing their art. So. Much. Fun.

Beautiful, moving & powerful – Heather Hill’s Leuty Station

Heather Hill launched her new CD, Leuty Station, at the Drake Underground last night – and what a night!

Met my pal Lizzie Violet out front and we stopped by the merch table to visit Meghan Morrison, who co-wrote “Wading Through Normal” with Hill and producer Orville Heyn for this record. I picked up a copy of Leuty Station, as well as Hill’s NYC recording of her debut CD Listen. Listening to Leuty Station as I write this – and I love that Hill included a lyrics booklet with this CD!

Micah Barnes

Micah Barnes opened with a fabulous set of  jazz and R&B numbers, accompanying himself on a gorgeous baby grand. Sexy, playful and charming, Barnes gave us a few mini-sets, rising in between to chat with the audience from the centre microphone and introduce the next theme. I’m always a sucker for songs about love. And New York City. Barnes lived there for a while and said people who go there don’t want to leave. I can relate. His conversation with NYC reminded me of how much fun I had there during a three-day visit a few years ago, but how sad it was to leave it – and how I’m not sure I’d have the chutzpah to live there 24/7. Pay Barnes a visit here: http://www.micahbarnes.com/

After a short break, the main event: Heather Hill and band – including three female back-up singers – ascended the stage, with Hill taking her spot at the piano, and launching into a set that included most of the tracks off Leuty Station, with a couple of extras in between. Every song brings a different colour, a new shade, and showcases Hill’s songwriting (co-written with various folks, many with Heyn) and vocal chops so very nicely.

Heather Hill

Some personal stand-outs for me: “Last Train” – a powerful song of drive and desire, featuring an amazing acoustic guitar solo. “Second Chance” – the vocals smooth and sexy, with heart-wrenching lyrics that brought tears to my eyes. “Wading Through Normal” is a powerful anthem to a single mother’s daily grind and sacrifice – and reminded me that the day after the launch is Mother’s Day. The title track “Leuty Station” references a lifeguard station in the east Beaches of Toronto – and the station is featured in the gorgeous cover photo on the CD – a beautiful, melancholy reflection in a moment of solitude. “Strawberry Girl” is a tribute to Hill’s parents’ love; the “girl” of the title is her mom. I love the line that the secret of their relationship is no secret: “Love, god’s faith and laughter./And a strawberry beach bag.” “Between the Leather and the Lining” was one of the first songs of Hill’s I’d heard, and I love the upbeat pop vibe of this tune on the secrets of handbags, especially the horn arrangement (reminiscent of the Beatles).

Heather Hill with The Au Pears

Musical surprises included a really fun cover of “Our House,” with Dave Restivo joining the band on piano while Hill took the centre mic. The back-up singers, Humber students nearing graduation, are known collectively as The Au Pears and treated us with a lovely three-part a cappella song – a hauntingly beautiful, original, Celtic-inspired ballad. Definitely keep your eyes and ears peeled for these ladies.

An incredible evening of music and friends – with the added fun of a door prize: a very cool original handbag, designed and created by Heather’s friend Jane. “Leuty Station” is beautiful, moving and powerful CD of inspiring original tunes performed by the lovely, talented – and classy – Heather Hill and a selection of incredible musicians.

Visit Heather Hill and give her a listen at her site: http://www.heatherhill.ca/fr_press.cfm

DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS: In yesterday’s post on Life As A Pomegranate, I incorrectly referred to Kat Leonard’s song “Not Us” as “Happy People” – that’s been corrected. My apologies for the error – and thanks to Kat for being so cool when she pointed it out.
